Miscellaneous metalwork

Post by Richard » Wed Feb 04, 2015 2:38 pm

Hey Folks. Just thought I'd start a thread on which to post pics of all my miscellaneous metal work projects.

To start, find below a little something I made for a mate. The pattern welded steel is made from alternating layers made from an old file (probably 1095 or W1 tool steel) and some old EN45 spring steel sword blades. The billet was folded until it contained ~ 200 layers and then etched with ferric chloride.

At mum's request, this year's Mother's Day gift was a pattern welded knife:

10 layers of alternating 1084 and 15N20 steels, folded to give a 180 layer laminate. The bar was twisted and then forged into a blade.
Overall length is about 12 inches.
